Jason McDonald - The Roo, the Magpie and Friends
Jason McDonald enjoyed a successful career in Sydney as an award-winning graphic designer before returning to the family farm near Mudgee where he grew up surrounded by nature. His absolute affinity with the bush shines through all his art practice and has won him much critical acclaim. Capturing the minute detail of plants and creatures through the eye of the lens, McDonald truly accentuates beauty in a micro world.
In this most recent collection The Roo, The Magpie & Friends, Jason presents a delightful portrait series of his orphan animals - Loppy the kangaroo, Squeaker the magpie, Holly the honeyeater and Little Pipit. All rescued on the farm, they soon ingratiated into both home and heart providing pure talent for a quick photographer. We follow their free for all amongst the memorabilia of the lovingly restored Shearer’s Cottage Jason calls home. The stylised monochromatic compositions contrasted with colourful vintage objects and fresh cut flowers from his garden lead us to examine nostalgic notions of childhood, memory, colour and play.
In 2018 Jason featured in his first exhibition in Mudgee and since then has appeared in group shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. More recently, he has been selected as a finalist in the Northern Beaches Environmental Art & Design Prize Nov. 12 - Dec.12, Manly Art Gallery & Museum (postponed due to COVID lockdown) and will be exhibiting at the 20th Anniversary of Artisan in the Gardens, Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney in October 2021.
