Robin Meiklejohn - A Brush with Nature
Robin Meiklejohn is an Orange based watercolour artist . Growing up in the Blue Mountains completely surrounded by natural bush land Robin developed a life long appreciation of the beauty and fragility of her natural environment. It is her love of this environment that underpins much of her art practice today.
Leaving school, Robin trained as an Early Childhood Teacher in Bathurst and for the next 30 years was totally absorbed in her profession passing on her love of art with a creative curriculum very much based on “Art From The Heart.
A chance visit to an art store in 2011, she found herself signing up to a Botanical Art course at the Orange Botanic Gardens under the tuition of Botanical Artist Mary Ann Mein. Robin is still painting with this art group, meeting together each month.
Today Robins art practice could be best described as a combination of Natural Illustration and Botanical Art. Watercolour and graphite are her preferred mediums as they allow her to depict the delicate and intricate details of her subjects, working with layers of transparent colours to build up her realistic images.
The images she creates are rendered from specimens & foliage gathered & bought into her studio. Her birds & animals are usually drawn and painted from photographs referenced from the generosity of talented photographers she has connected with through her practice. Her recent marine series have been painted from live specimens obtained from her local “fish market” the best she could do living so far from the ocean.
Awarded a “Highly Commended” in the 2019 “Little Things Art Prize”, Saint Cloche Gallery Paddington gave Robin the confidence to enter her art work in exhibitions in both local and regional Galleries.
