Studio Visit with Madeline Young

Tucked away behind The Corner Store Gallery is a room filled with art and craft supplies. Since we moved into our new home behind the gallery I’ve been lucky enough to inherit this little room as my new studio and craft room, much to my husband’s delight (no more painting on the kitchen table). I feel incredibly lucky to have this space, it’s right off the gallery so while I’m at work I can just pop into the next room and keep my practice alive.

The afternoon sun spills into the high ceilinged room, bouncing natural light around the white walls. The studio is packed with paintings at the moment ready for my solo exhibition The Light is Different Here, opening April 10th. This exhibition is an exploration of my love of the Australian bush. I’m a little obsessed with foraging different gum leaves at the moment and filling my studio with the scent of eucalyptus. The unique blue/green hues and dried pink/orange leaves provide my colour palette.

My work is quite abstract, I exaggerate colour and shape to create my compositions. I want the viewer to feel as though they are lying on the ground looking up through the canopy of the bush with sunlight filtering through the rustling branches.

The Light is Different Here opens for pre-sales on Monday April 8th at 8pm via our online store. Doors to the exhibition open April 10th and the Official Launch is Friday April 12th from 6pm. I’d love to see you there. A big thank you to Emily Ellis for the beautiful photographs.

Madeline Young is the Director of The Corner Store Gallery. Madeline completed a degree in Fine Arts at the University of Newcastle in 2009 and has since worked as the Artist in Residence at an educational institution from 2010-14. The gallery was a bit of a pipe dream for Madeline since returning to Orange in 2011, and then a little corner store in East Orange came up for sale… The Corner Store Gallery was launched in August 2014 and has grown from strength to strength ever since.
