Alex Ball has been making public street art for many years now under the name of Umpel. Warehouse walls, cars, private buildings and shop windows are just a few of the places you will find his work. Alex works primarily with aerosol but also uses acrylic paint and paste ups to create his pieces. He has collaborated with a number of artists including our very own Ben Foster who exhibited at The Corner Store Gallery in November 2014, see one of their collaborations here. Together the two even created works on tsunami wrecks in Sri Lanka earlier in 2014. Often crude and amusing, Alex's work is always recognisable and made with great skill and attention to detail.
Alex is currently working as a motion (graphics) designer, his latest work involves minimalist/surrealist motion graphics. These short videos are often slightly unsettling and feature strange shapes, objects, characters and movement. The motion pieces are based on organic turbulence patterns sampled from motion tracking the movements in plants.
