Yan, Tan, Tethera is a joint exhibition from Hannah Orrock and Maria Shaw which explores the symbolism of animals in dreams. In this exhibition we look to develop a playful dialog between the observed (the animals captured within the dream) and the observer (audience).

Orrock’s paintings explore the interfaces between notions of the wild and the domestic realms in the collective imagination as well as the relationships between the bush and the city in Australian history and contemporary culture. Animals inhabit much of Orrock’s work and act as wry observers of human foibles and concerns.

Shaw on the other hand uses felting to create whimsical sculptures of cartoon-like sheep. Her over-exaggeration of the unrealistic sheep form highlights to the audience the fictional nature of the relationships people now have with animals, notably farm animals. With the local audience consisting of a farming community where the ‘real’ sheep image is kept alive through personal experience, the work highlights the difference between the farmers knowledge vs the city-dwelling consumers idealistic representation.
