Jane Henry
Contemporary Textile & Botanical Artist
Jane Henry’s work is a delicate fusion of traditional embroidery techniques and organic materials, bringing a unique perspective to Australian native flora. Her latest collection explores the intricate beauty of nature through hand-stitched compositions on indigo-dyed paper, seamlessly blending fine needlework with foraged botanical elements.
Rooted in childhood memories of learning fine needlework alongside her mother and grandmothers, Jane’s practice is both meditative and meticulous. Each piece is crafted with hundreds of individually hand-stitched banksia stamens, carefully dried, dissected, and arranged to highlight their natural elegance. This slow, intentional process captures the soothing and restorative qualities of working with thread and organic forms.
Although these materials are inherently ephemeral, Jane ensures their longevity by using archival-quality cotton paper and natural cotton and linen threads, preserving each intricate design within a sealed frame.
“I take great enjoyment from the process of re-arranging collected gifts from nature into beautiful creations, preserving them to celebrate a new perspective on their natural beauty.”
