Jane Tonks

Contemporary Landscape Painter

Jane Tonks is a contemporary landscape artist based on Wiradjuri Country in Orange, New South Wales. She holds a Diploma of Fine Arts and a Printmaking Certificate from the Western Institute of TAFE. Deeply inspired by nature, Jane’s work is informed by time spent in local bushland areas, particularly gaanha-bula (Mount Canobolas) and the Mullion Range State Conservation Areas.

Specialising in expressive, nature-focused landscapes, Jane’s paintings highlight the beauty, fragility, and resilience of the Australian environment. Her work encourages viewers to reflect on the importance of preserving biodiversity in these vital ecosystems.

Jane has exhibited widely, with four solo exhibitions and numerous group shows including at The Corner Store Gallery. Her accolades include:

  • Finalist – 2020 Calleen Art Award

  • Winner – 2020 Calleen People’s Choice Award

  • Winner – 2015 Barbara Bennett Major Award

  • Artstart Grant Recipient – 2012/2013, Australia Council for the Arts

“My arts practice focuses on the incredible beauty, fragility and resilience of the natural environment. My paintings are a form of advocacy, asking the viewer to take a closer look, appreciate and protect the biodiversity of these unique and vulnerable pockets of surviving bushland, which are so critically important to the health of our planet. Many of my works are painted from local bushwalking areas in the gaanha-bula (Mt. Canobolas) and Mullion Range State Conservation Areas” – Jane Tonks.
