Jo Dunsmuir
Contemporary Still Life Artist
Jo Dunsmuir is a modern still life artist celebrated for her sophisticated, textural oil paintings that balance simplicity with complexity. Her work is an exploration of bold color and rich textures, creating compositions that feel both clean and refined, while also layered with depth and nuance. Each piece invites viewers to engage with its underlying complexity, where the play of light, form, and texture creates a visual experience that is both uncomplicated and emotionally resonant.
A lifelong love of drawing led Jo to pursue art later in life, after studying Interior Decoration as an adult. As a self-taught oil painter, she experimented with various mediums before discovering the expressive power of oil paint, which became the foundation of her current practice.
Jo lives in a small coastal township on the Great Ocean Road in regional Victoria, where the natural beauty of the environment informs much of her landscape and still life work. Her love of gardening plays a significant role in her still life paintings, where she captures the beauty of homegrown flowers, fruit, and carefully curated household objects.
Her style is a fusion of modern simplicity and sophistication, with each painting revealing an intricate, layered approach beneath its seemingly simple exterior. Jo has exhibited widely in group shows since 2021, and her work has been a finalist in prominent national art prizes, including those hosted by The Corner Store Gallery, Lethbridge 20000, and the Waverley Woollhara 9 x 5 Landscape Prize. Her paintings are held in private collections across Australia and internationally.
