Raphe Coombes

Australian Abstract Artist Inspired by Landscape, Energy & Connection

Based in northern NSW, Raphe Coombes is an Australian abstract artist whose work is inspired by landscape, energy, connection, and history. Using bold colours, thick, tactile brushstrokes, and his own handmade pigments, Raphe creates striking abstract works that evoke the natural world and its rhythms. Drawing from traditional oil-making methods, Raphe grinds his own pigments and uses walnut and stand oil to produce unique colours, connecting his practice to the masters of the past.

Raphe’s paintings are rich in texture and energy, with impasto marks and vibrant hues. His works often feature sweeps of blue symbolising water, pops of red and yellow representing blooming flowers, and fluid marks capturing the movement of bird flight paths. These elements invite viewers to explore the emotional depth and dynamic energy embedded in the canvas.

With a background in art education from Kingswood Art and Design School and the Orange Art and Design Campus, Raphe’s works are held in numerous private collections across Australia and internationally. His abstracted landscapes continue to captivate collectors with their lively expression and intimate connection to the world around us
