Studio Visit with Jaq Davies & Glenn Hoyle
To see this creative couple's home studio you really have to see the entire property. There are artistic installations and details everywhere you look. Spiraled metal scraps encasing tree branches, toy horse installations atop garden plinths, wind chimes made out of old bells and horse accessories, as well as hidden sculptures made Jaq,Glenn & their daughter Bell situated amongst the undergrowth. But just for official purposes, let's start in Jaq's painting studio at the back of their home in Clifton Grove, just outside of Orange.
I visited Jaq's studio last year around the same time before her first solo exhibition at The Corner Store Gallery, Field of Dreams. The studio looks much the same, only with new artworks on the go.
Paintings and drawings collage the main wall, all half finished with several pieces on the go all at once. The other walls are dotted with toys, birds nests, clothing and other strange objects, providing inspiration for Jaq's paintings. Some smaller unsuspecting victims have been caged in some of her new sculptures, egg-shaped wired spheres on their way to the gallery this week for the exhibition. Boxes and shelves housing all manner of treasures are tucked away for future use, and there's no telling what she might use them for. To paint or to assemble? Let's just say Jaq won't run out of projects any time soon.
Glenn joins us and we head out to the shed for a look at his toys, and there are plenty of them..... He shows me his sculptures nestled amongst the machinery that created it, holding up the pieces like a proud kid. Jaq and Glenn tease each other the entire visit, continually showing me all the hidden pieces throughout the property. Chooks, horses and a jack russel roam freely around the beautifully established garden overlooking the surrounding landscape.
It's not hard to understand how this tight knit family turned out so creative, with endless inspiration and creative opportunities abound. I look forward to seeing what they do next....
Jaq Davies and Glenn Hoyle's new exhibition will be on display at The Corner Store Gallery from March 17 - April 3 with an opening night on Friday March 18th 6-8pm, we'd love to see you there!
