Georgina Sambell: Winner of the 2022 Regional Landscape Prize
We are absolutely thrilled to announce regional Victorian artist Georgina Sambell as the winner of the inaugural Regional Landscape Prize for her work Chambers Gorge. The art prize aims to foster established and emerging creative talent in regional Australia and showcases regional, rural and outback Australia in all its brilliant and beautiful glory.
Georgina is an artist living in South West Victoria. In 2017 she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at Monash University and has recently been a finalist in the Percival Portrait Prize, Rick Amor self-portrait prize, Trails Sculpture prize (winner) and last year, was the winner of the local Warrnibald portrait prize.
“In September I spent most of the month in the Ikara -Flinders Ranges and Vulkathunha -Gammon Ranges paintings and sketching on Adnyamathanha country. I camped out for a few days at Mount Chambers Gorge and painted this work from direct observation of the track going into the gorge, with the late afternoon light casting magnificent shadows across the land.” - Georgina Sambell.
Georgina is the recipient of the major $5000 cash prize, donated by generous sponsors Source Architects, as well as a two-week residency at Quest Orange in 2023, to complete a body of work inspired by the Orange landscape. Residency expenses will be partly covered courtesy of a grant from Arts OutWest Country Arts Support Program.
There were 44 finalist artists selected from across Australia, with nearly half originating from the Central West. We have been amazed by the quality and diversity of entries in our first year offering the prize and applaud all entrants and finalists. The Landscape Prize is about creating a sense of place in the works, and the judging panel recognise Georgina as the winner for 2022 because of the immediacy and authenticity of her work. We look forward to welcoming this emerging artist to Orange and seeing what she creates when inspired by our local regional landscape next year.

The finalist Exhibition is open November 9th through to November 20th, with winner announced at the Opening Night event on Friday, November 11th.
