Tasmanian artist Fiona Verdouw combines her love of wilderness and nature to create oil paintings of her experiences in landscapes which an audience can connect with.

Rather than documenting grand landmarks and destinations, her work focuses more on what is discovered along the way: Views through trees, scatterings of leaves and misty mountain-tops seen from roads and hiking tracks around her home state.

Drawing upon Tasmania’s unique colour palette, Fiona’s work emphasises distinctive shapes found within landscapes to simplify scenery and highlight her favoured subject matter: Eucalyptus trees.

Fiona’s work has been shown in exhibitions and Art Prizes across Australia, with work featured in magazines and the sets of TV series. Her paintings have been purchased and commissioned by collectors across the country and overseas.

"The Tasmanian Wilderness is both inviting and daunting to encounter. Dense undergrowth and close eucalyptus forests create spaces that are magical to lose oneself in, but also dangerous to get lost within. As well as hiking in these vast areas, I also enjoy exploring them in my art. Eucalyptus trees resonate with me in particular, because they cut such distinctive profiles in a landscape, and create unique spaces with their canopies.

When painting, I focus on the positive and negative spaces made by these trees, and their relationship to one another. The background is always the last layer to go in. It isn’t until the final moments of a painting that the true shapes of the scene come into focus. The very process of creating has been an act of finding my way."

Artwork is available for collection or shipping after the closing date of the exhibition, September 22nd 2024.

We charge a flat rate of $35 for all artworks within Australia, with an additional $5 added for each extra artwork purchased through our online store. All artworks are insured and come safely packaged. Any artwork marked for CUSTOM SHIPPING is either too large, too heavy or too delicate to ship with our flat rate and will need a custom shipping invoice.

All online artwork sales are final and no refunds or returns will be accepted.
