This small series of three artworks explores the complex relationship we have with our self-image and the insecurities we collect over time. Each painting depicts the same self-portrait photograph, yet they all reveal different facets of our inner struggles.
In the first piece, new features are collaged over the face, symbolising the masks we create to present a more acceptable version of ourselves to the world. The second painting shows the face torn off, representing the deep scars and vulnerabilities we often hide, afraid of being truly seen. The third artwork, with paint strewn across the face, completely obscuring the features, reflects the overwhelming urge to cover up our perceived flaws and imperfections.
This series captures the universal experience of grappling with insecurities and the lengths we go to conceal them. It speaks to the internal battle between the desire to be authentic and the fear of judgment, highlighting the profound impact these insecurities have on our self-perception and the way we present ourselves to others.
Naomi is an accomplished Australian oil painter whose work epitomises imaginative realism, drawing heavily on the classical academic principles of the old masters. Rooted in a foundation of meticulous technique, Naomi's art is often autobiographical and allegorical, reflecting deep personal experiences of grief and faith.
With an emphasis on nostalgia and beauty, Naomi creates pieces that transcend mere aesthetics, inviting viewers to engage in critical thinking. Believing that art should be inherently beautiful regardless of its subject matter, Naomi strives to produce works that not only captivate the eye but also stir the soul.
Through her practice, Naomi endeavours to keep alive the timeless elegance of classical techniques while infusing them with contemporary relevance.
