This collection of tiered, rounded thrown forms was inspired by river pebbles and that very human activity of stacking them to make cairns. The form is curvaceous and inviting and the surface has a stony, satiny feel.
They are made from a combination of different blended clays, white smooth clay, iron rich clay and clay containing Trachyte to give that stony, pebbly and spotty surface.
Kaye enjoys the challenge of throwing them in one piece, pushing the clay from the inside and then outside on the potters’ wheel to form the curves. The pieces are fired to stoneware temperature and are durable and waterproof.
Kaye began working with clay in the late seventies in Kerang enjoying the malleability and endless possibilities of this wonderful material.
In 1987, Kaye completed a diploma of fine arts in Ceramics at Bendigo TAFE. As well as learning the finer aspects of construction and wheel work, she was introduced to glaze and firing techniques including raku firing which has continued to this day.
Kaye enjoys making work on the potter’s wheel as well as hand formed figurative and sculptural work. She makes my own glazes from raw materials and enjoys the challenge of the alchemist, constantly adapting and modifying glazes until they create the right surface and finish for her pieces.
Kaye’s studio is in Mooroopna near the Goulburn River. She teaches at Shepparton Art Museum and privately to a small group of dedicated students. Her work is available at Craft Victoria, Shepparton Art Museum and Bendigo Pottery.
