Rose works from her home studio in Bardwell Park Sydney, making functional and sculptural ceramic work using stoneware and porcelain.

She appreciates the tactile nature of handmade objects, the simple pleasure and visual appreciation they bring to her every day. Rose is drawn to the natural and imperfect forms that clay and her hands can create… their feel to hold, slight variances in shape and movement, the enhancement of food and drink within them, and the visual engagement when a piece catches the eye.

Rose first became interested in ceramic forms and their aesthetic in 1998. She followed her instincts and explored this further by enrolling in her first ceramics short course, exploring wheel throwing and hand building with coils. While realising working with clay was harder than it looked, her interest only deepened.

This led to a second course at The National Art School, Darlinghurst, Sydney. This proved to be extremely beneficial creatively, being taught by ceramic artist, Sandy Lockwood, who has been making, teaching, and exhibiting in Australia and overseas for over forty years. Rose continued to learn from Sandy taking courses at her studio in Balmoral, Southern Highlands.

The majority of Rose’s work is hand built using coils and slabs, a process she enjoys as it encourages the natural forms she looks for. Wheel throwing is incorporated, either as a separate process or combined with hand-built elements. Rose explores texture on the clay surface, combining glaze and slip application, with an appreciation for the clays natural texture, colour, and surface.
