‘Breathing Rain 7’ continues my engagement with the emblematic power of landscape imagery. It is born of the disorienting shadowless landscapes of CD Friedrich, and of Gerhard Richter’s soft-focus landscape oils alluding to private memories and longing.
"I lived on family market gardens in western Sydney (1960s-70s) at a time of social isolation and racial discrimination against migrants. That landscape was dirt roads and farms, and had obliterated the original Indigenous one. I have been compelled to photograph these generic rural landscapes for decades. They are ones of damage, and reflected my sense of groundless cultural hybridity. While travelling at speed, the car window becomes a cinematic screen for a silent, unscripted landscape narrative. The observing eye doesn’t always know when the finger might press the shutter. The unconscious challenge is to extract composure from the broken landscapes of flux and uncertainty."
