Rachel North is an Ipswich based artist and educator, working across textiles and ceramics. Growing up and living in predominantly rural and regional areas, her connection to landscape is an inherent component of her artworks. She has exhibited in group and solo shows in Townsville, Brisbane and Ipswich, and been a finalist and won awards for her artworks. She has also been the recipient of grants and bursaries. Communicating predominantly in ceramics and textile-based installation works, Rachel's consciousness about how the landscape shapes, holds and hinders memory, is central to her multi-disciplinary approach.
33o 44’ 8’’ S, 150o 18’ 52’’ E communicates the complex relationship between memory and the landscape. Each vessel, representative of the landmarks of the location, parallels the family ties to place. This work establishes a new series that continues the artist’s exploration of connections between the landscape and memory and how the colours and textures of a place can hold, heal and hinder memory. Drawing predominantly on the natural white of the porcelain clay body, the carved and etched surface emphasise the holders of the memory - the towering gums, wide open skies and loose rocky earth beneath the footfalls of a family in happier times.
