Kayla Amos is an emerging ceramic artist based in Bourke in far north-western NSW. She graduated from the University of New South Wales in 2019 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours. In 2020, she initiated her small business, New Hope Studios, and has parallel practices of exhibiting artworks and unique ceramic homewares. Her work encompasses the outback Australian landscape and its stories of resilience and hope. These are gently overlaid and intertwined with personal narratives.
‘River Trees I’ is inspired by the majestic River Red Gums that grow along the Darling River near the artist’s studio. Witnessing extreme seasons, such as drought in 2019 and subsequent flooding across 2022 and 2023, these trees continue to stand as other vegetation dies off. Through both extreme events emphasising how changeable and uncertain life can be, these River Red Gum’s exemplify a spirit of resilience. They are weathered and worn over time, yet their longevity in the face of challenge and circumstances beyond control are a reminder to refocus on what is important and what has a lasting impact. In creating this work, the artist explores the personal challenge, “How can I be more resilient like these river trees?”.
