The Hastings river region of the Mid North Coast of NSW is home to Australian artist Stu Doherty, the land of the Biripi people inspires and directs his gentle watercolour practice. Born in Camden south west of Sydney and studying at East Sydney Technical College in the late 90’s, the artist has always drawn inspiration from his natural surroundings.
Doherty has exhibited in group shows at QCAD Gallery Brisbane, Lethbridge Gallery QLD, Rex Livingstone gallery Katoomba, Brunswick Street Gallery Melbourne, Corner Store Gallery Orange, Glasshouse Regional Gallery Port Macquarie and was a finalist in the 2023 Elaine Bermingham National Watercolour Prize.
He was commissioned in 2023 to create public art for Bain Park Wauchope and this was unveiled in early 2024.
Walking from Charlotte Pass Lookout to Main Range Lookout in Summer is breathtaking. The sweeping views of Australia’s highest peaks in the Kosciuszko alpine region are truly awesome, but it’s the ancient snow gums that I really love. These trees, some hundreds of years old, are twisted, resilient, living sculptures shaped by the tough conditions of the Australian alpine land.
Snow gums thrive above 700 meters, enduring freezing winters, poor soils, and wild weather. Most people picture them under snow, but I think their beauty shines in the warmer months. That’s when their smooth bark glows in the sunlight. They’re tough as nails, but they’re not invincible. Climate change is putting them in danger with drought, beetle infestations, and bushfires all taking a toll.
As an artist, I’m drawn to their raw beauty and resilience. Using watercolor and gouache, I layer water and pigment using a time consuming technique to capture their shape, line and form.
The texture of the granite rock is one of my favourite parts of painting theses scenes, I use wet in wet techniques to create minerals, moss and lichen. Through my work, I hope to honour these iconic trees and spark a deeper appreciation for the fragile, yet fierce, Australian alpine landscape they belong to.
