I like to frequent wild places, where the landscape is dominated by mountains and trees as far as the eye can see.

Despite the basic visual make-up of such landscapes, there is endless variety in the ways these vistas present themselves. Weather patterns, seasonal changes and shifting light throughout the day presents the same landscape in a myriad of ways.

Inspired by this, I like to play with some of the less predictable colour combinations that occur within mature; such as the complementary colour pairing of orange and purple, used in 'With Complements'.

Small paintings like these also allow me work quickly and spontaneously; capturing something of the life found within the trees.

Tasmanian artist Fiona Verdouw combines her love of wilderness and nature to create oil paintings based upon her experiences in landscapes.

Rather than documenting grand landmarks and destinations, her work focuses on what is discovered along the way: Views through trees, peeling bark, misty mountain-tops and fallen leaves.

Embracing Tasmania’s unique colour palette, Fiona’s work emphasises distinctive shapes found within landscapes to simplify scenery and describe moments in places that her audience can connect with.

Fiona’s work has been shown in art prizes, exhibitions and galleries throughout Australia. Her paintings have been purchased and commissioned by collectors across the country and overseas.
