Mary Zammit is a self-taught Fleurieu Peninsula based artist, working representationally with oils. Mary spent her childhood travelling Australia and frequently practiced sketching the landscape and people around her. Her love of travel and the Australian coastline and landscape still play a large part in inspiring her work. Mary’s paintings are brought together with multiple layers of oil paint and a love of light, detail and colour.
Horizon's Edge is about that moment when you pause and feel the vastness around you in nature—the red cliffs stand firm, yet the rolling hills and shifting waves invite you to imagine what lies beyond. The horizon reflects the tension between knowing and seeking, between where we are and where we long to be. In this piece, I wanted to capture that quiet, almost personal feeling of standing at the edge of something larger than ourselves, feeling both grounded and free at the same time. It’s a reminder that every horizon holds both an end and a beginning, a place where everything connects and yet still feels like an endless journey. Inspired by the rugged cliffs of Cactus Canyon located in South Australia.
