Rebecca Kilpatrick is an interdisciplinary artist, working in the mediums of printmaking; painting; drawing; and installation. Born in Sydney, Kilpatrick trained in printmaking and drawing at the National Art School (Darlinghurst, NSW) before completing several art and museum-centred qualifications in NSW & QLD.
Kilpatrick’s academic training and experience working in science and art museum spaces are reflected in their artist practice, seen in choices including nods to graphic printmaking principles and material choices gained through knowledge acquired from over a decade engaging with fine art material manufacturers and artists alike. Works acknowledge the tradition of many female artists, referencing traditional style-life and botanical formats, but through the gaze of compositional examination removed from the domestic and more inline with the critical and scientific.
Sunflower Study (2) is one in a series of five paintings which examines the effects of the sun on a cut flower arrangement, under the exposure of intense Australian summer light. On a day of UV 7 light, the arrangement was slowly rotated and the petals wither, revealing a translucency in the structure of the plant and a gem light glitter in vase.
